Lauryn King is now a two-time Village News Softball Player of the Year. This year, she also managed to be named to the All-Conference 3 first team for her fourth time, earning the honor every year of her high school career. In her senior campaign she batted .486, got six triples, hit two home runs, batted 21 runs in, and scored 22 runs. Boys’ Player of the Year Juan Carlos Escobar, Senior, Meadowbrook  As a junior in 2016, Escobar finished the season with 19 goals and Conference 12 Player of the Year honors. Improving upon his junior year would be a challenge, but he did just that. Escobar retained his title this year as 2017 Conference 12 Player of the Year. He played a crucial part in the Monarchs’ goal production and scored 28 times this season while helping his team to 16-2-1 record. Keeping up with the tradition of establishing a well-rounded girls’ basketball team, Coach Chevette Waller has announced dates for basketball camp at L.C. Bird High School. Open to all girls, ages six through 16, the camp will be held June 19 through June 23 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to noon on Friday. With consistent production on the mound and a disciplined defense, the Warriors finished the regular season with a 13-4 record, and they are primed for a postseason run. Even when the Warriors lost this year, it hasn’t been by much. A 2-0 loss to Dinwiddie and a 1-0 loss to Prince George are two of the few blemishes on their resume. L.C. Bird veteran football coach David Bedwell, who captured three straight 5A state titles from 2012 to 2014, has stepped down as football coach and will assume the duties as the Skyhawks’ new athletic director. Bedwell, who spent 17 years as the head coach at the Chesterfield County school, will take over the AD position from Steve D’Adamo, who got the job after Chuck Thomas accepted a position at Fuqua School in 2015.
