The local baseball commitments, like a good poker hand, seem to be coming in pairs. And the good news is they are being dealt earlier too. Two outstanding athletes, Thomas Dale’s Evan Lester and L.C. Lester, a 5-foot-10, 145-pounder, declared he will continue his playing career at Hampden-Sydney College after his senior season in 2017. When asked why he made his decision as early as before his final year, Lester said, “I had taken a tour about a year back and absolutely loved the…

By Thomas Dozier Some people come into your life and you just know you will never be able to replace them if they left. Shedrick McCall III, a rising senior at L. C. Bird, knows this all too well. After his recruiting train had left the station with an offer from Old Dominion University, he received two more offers – Norfolk State and Morgan State – it was then he realized he was happy with the first offer he received from the Monarchs and decided to do something about it. On Monday, even though he had to work his summer…

“Sometimes to go forward you’ve got to go to the depths of your own personal despair and claw yourself back,” former Scottish soccer player and manager Gordon Strachan once said. “From that point, no matter what happens, you know you can do it.” While there’s much work to be done to reach the ultimate goal, former L. C. Bird baseball standout (Class of 2011) Nick Conner achieved a part of his dream when he made his professional debut on Father’s Day for the short-season Class A Auburn Doubledays, a minor-league affiliate of the Washington Nationals.
