When Chester residents Brenda and Bryan Vay met on the first day of classes at the University of Virginia, it may have been love at first sight. Thirty years later, they’re still happily married and a little over a year away from having an empty nest. What they couldn’t have known back then is that their eventual offspring, Hunter and Meredith, would both develop into Division I athletes. “I was more academic,” Bryan Vay said. “My wife played basketball at Monacan and swam.” Their youngest, Thomas Dale baseball standout Hunter Vay, made headlines recently as he verbally committed to Virginia…

Girls Even as a sophomore, Maiya Pencile dominated the competition. The Matoaca striker tallied 30 goals and 14 assists this past season, earning Conference 12 player-of-the-year honors, and being named to first team all 5A South Region. More importantly, her team made regionals for the first time since 2011. Pencile’s scoring instinct has led her to two very prolific seasons to start off her high school career. Last season she broke the school record with 32 goals, and she followed that up with 30 more goals this year. Maiya is a clinical finisher, whose skill and finesse push the team…

Girls Coming into the season with little tennis experience, Thomas Dale freshman Emily Nicol stayed committed to improving her game and finished the year with the Knights’ best individual record en route to being nominated for and winning the Village News girls Tennis Player of the Year. Emily’s intangibles were the key to earning an 8-5 record, and it is necessary to stay calm, cool, and collected while playing a difficult Conference 3 schedule. “Her poise really helped her in those tough matches against James River, Cosby, and Clover Hill,” said coach Ellen Womble. “She stayed cool and played some…

Thomas Dale coach Mark Fowler…
