Two Matoaca baseball alums received some of the highest individual honors this week for Randolph Macon. Senior Travis Lodge was named the Conference’s Player of the Year while sophomore Rick Spiers earned All-ODAC first team honors. Spiers picked up the Most Outstanding Player in the ODAC tournament just days later. A pair of senior leaders for L.C. Bird softball signed on the dotted line to continue their softball careers at Richard Bland College this past week, Kamryn Lanier and Ashley Fritz. Lanier, a third baseman and Fritz, a catcher are two key cogs for an L.C. Bird team that has shown great improvement over the past two seasons. Last year, they won their first round match-up in the Conference 12 tournament over Matoaca. Meadowbrook High School invites area coaches to their football camp being held Saturday, May 7 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cost to attend is $25 per individual in advance ($30 at the door) and $100 per staff (up to 10). Highlights of the camp will be NFL Safety Bradian Ross speaking, and Hopewell Head Coach Ricky Irby will be speaking on utilizing the QB in the run game. Fast as a speeding bullet, Matoaca’s Jacorey Flood has burst off the starting block on the track and into collegiate pursuits. This past week, the Warrior signed his letter of intent to the track and field program at Stevenson University. “Great atmosphere, coaches and the players really welcomed me as an athlete,” said Flood. “The team is driven to get better day in and day out so it definitely was appealing to me as a college choice.” Stevenson University, located in Stevenson, Maryland, takes part in the Middle Atlantic Conference. L.C. Bird standout football player Isaiah Moore picked up his third offer this week from the Naval Academy. Moore has previously been offered a place by Army, ironically Navy’s biggest rival, and Old Dominion University. The linebacker has also visited several other colleges and should see more offers in the coming weeks. Alongside Virginia Tech commit Rayshard Ashby, the set of linebackers will be a feared duo heading into next season for the Skyhawks. This past year, Moore was named to the 5A South Second Team for his role in L.C. Bird’s formidable defense.

UNC guard and former L.C. Bird basketball star Kenny Williams underwent surgery last Thursday for a torn meniscus. The surgery came just three days after UNC lost in the National Championship to Villanova, a game in which Williams did not play. The sharpshooter averaged 4.1 minutes per game and scored 23 points on the year including a three pointer against Pittsburgh in the ACC Tournament. Williams will be out 6-8 weeks, but will return in time for preseason practices, looking to work himself into a larger role next year.

The road to success for Meadowbrook girls’ soccer has been a long one, and it is still an uphill climb. After a winless season last year, the Monarchs have already picked up two victories – shutting out Huguenot and Dinwiddie. “Every game is a step in the right direction for us,” said coach Joseph Farrell. “These girls endured some losses in the beginning of the season but never once have given up.” Success started to smile upon the program under former coach Ernst Chamberlain, who led Meadowbrook to four victories, snapping a losing streak that lasted nearly three seasons. Opening day is always a big day for the Central Chesterfield Little League and their players. Brian Reed, CCLL president welcomed the 52 teams in the league along with team managers, coaching staff, team moms and their families that kept the yearly tradition and weathered the rain on Saturday during the opening ceremonies. The fun games and activities scheduled for the rest of the day had been dampened and most families left after the opening ceremonies. L.C. Bird running back Shedrick McCall (6-1, 245) pulled in his first of what should be many college offers this week when Old Dominion extended a scholarship to him. A recent visit to James Madison University is the first of many planned visited for the rising senior – he has been invited to visit the campuses of Purdue, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Virginia, Richmond, East Carolina and North Carolina State, according to this father.
