Former Matoaca standout Aaron Monts attended Richmond Christian last year. No matter what school he attended, there was little doubt that he’d be a college-level running back. River City Crew, a non-profit youth rowing program will be running three Learn-to-Row camps for rising 8ths thru 11th graders. These are two week, Monday through Friday programs for beginners with no rowing experience. We also have Intermediate/Advanced camps for experienced youth rowers and sculling lessons. Upon completion rowers will be eligible to join our team for the fall and spring seasons. River City Crew is a non-affiliated coed youth rowing club with rowers from 20 schools in the Richmond area including nine Chesterfield County schools and home school students. Matoaca alum and Yellow Jackets senior Travis Lodge started the season hot. Over the past couple of weeks, he has gotten even hotter. Both the ODAC and D3baseball.com have taken notice of his outstanding play. On March 28, Lodge was named Old Dominion Athletic Conference player of the week. A local duo comprised of two Thomas Dale alums have been carrying a large portion of the offensive load for the Tigers in 2016. This past Thursday, Hampden-Sydney exploded for 16 runs in a victory over Lynchburg. A pair of sophomores, Maurice “Moe” Gothe and Brian Goodwin delivered the brunt of the offensive break out. Gothe went 3-4 with two runs scored, driving in five runs, while Goodwyn was 3-5 knocking in and scoring two runs. Obediah Stith, a tough guard for Matoaca picked up his first college offer to play at the next level. The offer came from Bluefield State College in West Virginia. “It was truly a blessing,” Stith said. “Hard work does pay off.” The senior played mostly point guard for Matoaca, but showed a touch for getting baskets, finishing second on the team in scoring behind junior and division I recruit Terrence Whitfield. Since he stepped on the field at L.C. Bird, Rayshard Ashby has been one of the most dominant players in the Central Region. The linebacker, winner of two state championships and headed into his senior season made his college choice; Virginia Tech. The choice came this past weekend on a visit to campus. “I wasn’t even planning on committing,” Ashby said. “I had thought about committing over the summer and it was going to be between Marshall, Maryland and Virginia Tech. New Meadowbrook softball coach Lisa Keys inherits a program that has struggled for some time now. Once proud, the program has been in a state of rebuilding. Keys is here to change this. “I took this job to grow the program,” said Keys. “My coaching philosophy is physical-mental-emotional development in perfect alignment at once.” A pitching coach for 25 years and a former college coach at the Brigham Young University-Hawaii, she appears to have the credentials and experience to get the job done. Boys Soccer The Monarchs fell in the second straight year to a tough Mills Godwin team in the regionals. After losing 2-1 in 2014, they fell 2-0 last season. A host of solid returning players and one of the deepest Meadowbrook squads will take aim at a Conference 12 championship in coach Gabriel Hochstetler’s third season.
