Boys’ Track and Field Athlete of the Year Aaron Lewis, L.C. Bird Aaron Lewis, a junior at L.C. Bird helped lead a Skyhawk team loaded with talent in all facets. Lewis ran some sprint events and was part of the 1,600-meter relay team throughout the year, but he shone brightest in hurdling events, particularly the 300. At the Conference 12 championship meet, Lewis impressed by finishing fifth in the 110-meter hurdle finals. If he hasn’t already done that locally with an outstanding athletic career at Meadowbrook, he definitely has now. Raymond, a sprinter and long jumper for the Monarchs track and field team, has signed his NCAA National Letter of Intent to run for the University of Clemson. “He has committed to competing in track and field at the collegiate level since entering high school,” said coach Rickey Brown of Meadowbrook track and field.…

Leaning on a little more experience than last year and some fresh new talent, the team has promise heading into the thick of the season. Senior transfer from California, Alexis Newberry has made an immediate impact for the team. She recently broke the school record in the 500-meter dash by six seconds at the Suffolk Stars invitational. Running a blistering 1:21:98, she finished fourth at the meet. Matoaca alum Sam Gunther has already had an excellent career running at Bridgewater College, but for his senior year, he naturally, wanted to go out with a bang. Mission accomplished. This past weekend, Gunther broke his own ODAC and Bridgewater record with a time of 1:50.58 in the 800m run. The record breaking performance occurred at the Wolfpack Last Chance meet at North Carolina state, while Gunther, (affectionately called “Gunna” here at home) placed fourth in the race out of 17 runners, including many Division I athletes. “He’s one of the best athletes I’ve ever coached,” said coach Charles Bailey.…

A program with many college level athletics historically, Thomas Dale track added another notch to their belt when distance runner Michael Tres announced he will be running at Virginia Wesleyan. “After visiting and being able to meet with the team and coaches, it was a program athletically I felt would be able to fit in very well with,” said Tres. “It’s also a great academic school that I could attend for the next four years.” Tres has had a solid senior season so far, with conference, region and state meets on the horizon. Fast as a speeding bullet, Matoaca’s Jacorey Flood has burst off the starting block on the track and into collegiate pursuits. This past week, the Warrior signed his letter of intent to the track and field program at Stevenson University. “Great atmosphere, coaches and the players really welcomed me as an athlete,” said Flood. “The team is driven to get better day in and day out so it definitely was appealing to me as a college choice.” Stevenson University, located in Stevenson, Maryland, takes part in the Middle Atlantic Conference. Proud parents Greg and Kim Lanier last week accompanied their son Andrew Lanier as he signed a letter of intent to run cross country for Longwood University. Andrew is a standout on the Matoaca Warrior cross country and track teams where he qualified for regionals freshman through senior year in cross country and track. He was an 800 and 1600 meter specialist on the track team where he served as the distance team captain. Andrew was also named to the All District team each year of his high school career. A weak link causes a chain to break under pressure. That’s been the message and theme of the 2015 Thomas Dale track season started by head coach Jamarri Price. The chain that’s been forged by the Knights this season is as strong as ever.
