The Chesterfield Little League 8-10 year old softball team fell short of making the final of a regional tournament in Clarksville, Tenn., this past weekend despite a 2-1 record in pool play. Over the weekend, Chesterfield defeated West Virginia 8-2 and Georgia 4-3, but lost to eventual champion Unicoi, Tenn., 4-3. The journey to the tournament…

Want to go out with a bang your senior year? Try hitting .600. That’s why Thomas Dale High School’s softball utility player Madison Rice did. She is the Village News Player of the Year. The Knights made a run to the state tournament in 2018, Rice’s junior year, and as a senior she helped guide the team to a 15-5 record. The team battled through injuries and adversity this year, and Rice proved to be a most useful player. “Maddy had to play multiple positions this year,” coach Patrick Sweet said. “She started out at her normal position of shortstop…

Like Thomas Dale High School baseball, softball went on a ride last year that took them to the state semifinals, where they fell to Grassfield. And like their diamond counterparts, they’ll do everything they can to get back and make it to the promised land under coach Patrick Sweet. Three seniors graduated from the 15-7 team: T’Asijah Vaughan (Virginia State), Brooke Dudley and Rebecca Kirby. The former two were starters, and the latter was a reserve player who provided great leadership. Longwood University pledge and senior Leigha Hill will enter the circle for her last season pitching for Thomas Dale.…

Matoaca High School softball has long been a proud program, but the team experienced a dip last season, won just six games and qualified for the postseason as the No. 8 seed, falling to top-ranked Atlee. “We are an older team, but we have some players in new positions this year,” coach Scott Driskill said. Gone is pitcher Katie Higgins, who had a standout career. Senior Paige Berberette will step into the circle as the Warriors’ primary pitcher. Sophomore Rylee Franklin and freshman Brianna Branch are also expected to throw. Sophomore Hailey Hengle will finish out the battery at catcher.…

The Chesterfield Senior Softball Association is accepting registrations. The registration deadline is March 1. Fees are $50 for country residents and $65 for non-county residents. Late registration is an extra $10. The CSSA is a slow-pitch softball league open to men 50-plus and women 40-plus. All doubleheader games and practices are played at Harry G. Daniel Park at Iron Bridge. Each season generally runs from April until the first week of October. The men’s league is played on Thursdays, and a co-ed league has games on Mondays. This year there will be recreational and competitive divisions for each league. For…

The Chesterfield Little League all-stars of ages 9-11 girls softball recently won a regional tournament in Clarksville, Tenn. They went undefeated, beating North Carolina 12-2, Florida 8-4 and West Virginia 11-1.

Lauryn King is now a two-time Village News Softball Player of the Year. This year, she also managed to be named to the All-Conference 3 first team for her fourth time, earning the honor every year of her high school career. In her senior campaign she batted .486, got six triples, hit two home runs, batted 21 runs in, and scored 22 runs. Normally playing in the outfield, King also put together some great outings on the mound when she was called to pitch when the Knights’ rotation faced injury. “She’s a dynamic player,” said coach Dennis Jones. Jones, also…

By Josh Mathews With a familiar face back at the helm in Scott Driskill, Matoaca softball has some exciting youth led by one of the top pitchers in the area, junior Katie Higgins. Higgins is the team’s leader and has pitched well in the circle to a 3.60 ERA. He’s consistent and at times, spectacular. She’s also been a force to deal with at the plate and is perhaps the team’s best all-around player. “Katie is one of the most competitive players I’ve had,” Driskill said. “She knows and understands the game, but still has fun playing it.” A…

While injuries to pitchers are seemingly always a story in baseball, they are less apparent on the softball field, but they affect a team just as much. That’s exactly what Thomas Dale has experienced as they are off to a 0-4 start as of press time. Staff ace, sophomore, and Longwood commit Leigha Hill went down with an arm injury, and it’s been a bumpy start for the Knights. “Sometimes life doesn’t go the way it’s supposed to,” said coach Dennis Jones. “You have to overcome that adversity.” As bumpy as it’s been, there have been many positives, and their…

Matoaca baseball Record: 20-4 Coach: Tim Haynes The Warriors had a strong season last year. Their impressive run ended by way of a tough loss to Glen Allen in the first round of the regional tournament. Left-handed pitcher Robert Fultineer and infielder Zach Clark have both graduated and leave some holes to fill. All-Conference selections Jacob Floyd (1B), John Bowles (OF), and Randolph-Macon commit James Womack (P) return for a senior-leaden Matoaca squad. The Warriors strength lies in their pitching rotation and defense. If they can get the bats going, they could have a tremendous season. Matoaca softball Record: 9-8…
