In introducing Fire Prevention Week, which began Oct. 9, Chesterfield County’s Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) demonstrated Thursday afternoon the benefits of residential fire sprinkler systems at the Enon Fire Training Facility.
The Chesterfield County Fairgrounds welcomed senior citizens from around the region Thursday morning for the community debut of Fun at the Fairgrounds, a free health and wellness festival for adults 50 years old and older.

Last Thursday afternoon, two kayaks, paddled by two middle-aged men, pulled up to the Dutch Gap boat landing right off the James River in Chester. Sun burnt and damp, they had just concluded a four-day, 90-mile aquatic adventure which began in Suffolk, Va., early Monday morning; yet their energy confirmed they could have gone on for days.
Showers weren’t predicted for last Saturday morning, but the early morning rain did not keep serious bike riders away from CCHASM’s Spirit 76 Ride. The ride, with the starting point at Chester Baptist Church’s parking lot, gave bikers a choice of either a 76-mile ride or a 40-mile ride through southern Chesterfield County.
Henricus Historical Park received a check on Sept.16 from the Virginia Society Children of the American Revolution (VSCAR) for $3,000. The funds will be used to maintain the “Yehakins,” or longhouses, in the park’s Virginia Indian site. The undertaking was led by Laura Shelton, past president of VSCAR (2010-2011), as her state project.
Service, to Sarah Gregory, is more than offering a few hours of her time here and there – it’s more like a way of life. For 50 years, she has been improving her community by helping the individuals who comprise it; and she never sees herself stopping because “it’s hard to say no when somebody needs something,” she said.
