Bilal Sayar, son of Sharif and Anena Sayar, delivered the valedictory address to the Matoaca High School Class of 2010. With plans to study biomedical engineering at Virginia Commonwealth University in the fall and a goal of being a neurosurgeon, Sayar gave advice about the future to the 412 seniors during the commencement exercises on Friday, June 11.
Perseverance and knowing yourself were the messages from the top two seniors at L.C. Bird High School and The Governor’s Academy for Engineering Studies. Salutatorian Kenneth Andrew Nicholson said there will be catastrophes in life, but the graduates need to persevere and make it through the hard times. “We can persevere,” he said.
Vanessa Santos, daughter of Armando and Clenentina Santos, glowed when she expressed her feelings about reaching the top of her class. As valedictorian for the Class of 2010 at Chesterfield Community High School, Santos told the 154 candidates on Saturday, June 12, that, “[Community] offered us, each of us, just what we needed.”
L.C. Bird High School’s Dr. Nancy Hoover was recently named the 2011 Teacher of the Year for Chesterfield County Public Schools.
As a reward for reading more than 750 books, Marianne Lyon’s third-grade class at Ecoff Elementary School enjoyed lunch with a squirrel last week.
O.B. Gates Elementary School came in third and earned $3,000 in a recent online contest to name America’s favorite school. Superintendent Marcus Newsome announced the results of the contest, sponsored by www.care2.com, at a press conference at Gates Elementary last week.
The School Board last week unanimously approved using about $6.5 million in projected savings in the current fiscal year to fund one-time payouts to employees equal to 2 percent of their current salaries.
Kayla Narron, a seventh grade student at Elizabeth Davis Middle School in Chesterfield County, has won the PTA’s Reflection contest. The contest honors excellence in arts in school; Kayla’s entry was in dance and chorography. She won at the middle school, county, district and state levels. Her piece is now entered at the national level.
