Local sports pros visit Curtis for Family Fitness Night

Chester families who visited Curtis Elementary last Friday evening for Family Fitness Night had the unique opportunity to both speak with and receive autographs from three local pros – Johnny Grubb who played 16 seasons in Major League Baseball, Ken Oxendine a former NFL running back with the Atlanta Falcons, and young professional soccer player Roger Bothe of the Richmond Kickers. All three men attended Curtis during their youth.

Thomas Dale searches for an idol

On Friday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m., Thomas Dale High School will host the first night of “Thomas Dale’s Got Talent”, a school-wide talent show featuring students performing in a variety of artistic mediums. Held in the school’s auditorium, the show features live acts competing for monetary prizes which will be awarded Friday, March 4, after numerous rounds of elimination have ensued.

Spell check

It took students representing grades five through eight 17 rounds of spelling words like “euphonious” and “reticulated” to determine the top speller during the annual Chesterfield County Public Schools (CCPA) spelling championship.

Sports for the mind

Outside the L.C. Bird High School gym on Saturday, Feb. 5, there were all the trappings of a typical sporting event: The loud cheering of the fans, the announcer’s steady broadcasting and the enticing aroma coming from the concession stand nearby.

Students focus on service at Bellwood

Whether it’s by collecting ChapStick for soldiers or selling candy grams to raise money for a classmate, the students and faculty at Bellwood Elementary School are always ready to lend a helping hand.

Cla Meredith speaks at Meadowbrook

Major League baseball player Cla Meredith visited Meadowbrook High School last Tuesday, speaking in the lecture hall to roughly 50 of the school’s male student-athletes. A free-agent for most of the winter, Meredith signed the next day with the Washington Nationals. The team has invited him to spring training, which will be starting in the next few weeks.

Scholarship competition set for Feb. 27

The Chester Lions Club will sponsor its annual Bland Music Scholarship Competition on Sunday, Feb. 27, in the Chester Baptist Church sanctuary, located at 4317 W. School St. The program will begin at 2 p.m. Doors will open at 1 p.m., according to information from the club.

Matoaca students help clean yards

The weather was cold and the day overcast, but the warm spirit of service was burning bright last month when the Matoaca High School Red Cross Club helped several local citizens clear leaves from their yards, according to information from Librarian Alda Moore.
