‘Flag field’ at Dunlop House honors veterans

COLONIAL HEIGHTS – A field full of more than 200 flags will be on display in front of the Dunlop House Assisted Living facility in Colonial Heights through Monday, Nov. 12. The field was prepared in cooperation with Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2239 to honors veterans. Attached to each flag is the name of a veteran from Virginia who died while serving since 2003. Sheriff to speak at Veterans Day event

John Tyler Community College is hosting a Veterans Day ceremony on Monday, Nov. 12. The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. in Hamel Hall, Room H109, at the college’s Midlothian campus, 800 Charter Colony Parkway. Chesterfield County Sheriff Karl Leonard will be the keynote speaker. Leonard served as a Coast Guard reservist for 30 years, and has more than 30 years of experience working in local law enforcement. School Safety Task Force issues recommendations

Chesterfield’s School Safety Task Force recently completed its list of recommendations, which are scheduled to be considered by the school board Dec. 11. Four working groups presented their recommendations Oct. 31 at the Chesterfield Tech Center. Among the recommendations are: that the state and Chesterfield adopt best practices for professional-to-student staffing ratios in regard to school psychologists, social workers, nurses and counselors; develop a plan to fund and sustain multi-tiered “whole child” frameworks, such as social-emotional learning, trauma-informed care, restorative practices, and positive behavior interventions and support; increase funding for mental health staffing; provide education instead of suspension for students…

Man gets five years for concealing woman’s body

A 44-year-old man was recently sentenced to 25 years in prison with 20 suspended for concealing a woman’s dead body and two counts of drug possession. John Stephen Nielsen was sentenced Oct. 26 by Chesterfield County Circuit Court Judge T.J. Hauler after Nielsen gave an Alford plea, which is an admission that the state had enough evidence to convict him. The felony convictions – five years for concealing a body and 10 years for each count of drug possession – were imposed on a master electrician who had a stellar recommendation from his most-recent employer, but also multiple convictions ranging…

County to honor WWI soldiers and all veterans Sunday

A commemoration of the 100th anniversary of World War I and a Veterans Day event will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, on the courtyard outside the old Chesterfield County courthouse. The event will include the unveiling of a World War I interpretive sign by the Chesterfield History Society and the board of supervisors.
