A land-falling hurricane

0

Just two days ago, we were standing on the shore of the Cape Fear River, looking at one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. The mandatory evacuation notice for vacationers came Monday afternoon, Sept. 10. For residents, it was Sept. 11-12. A canceled vacation only matters to those whose vacation was canceled. We left with a light breeze blowing and the sun shining brightly. A low-pressure system came off the west coast of Africa, met favorable conditions for formation of a hurricane and threatened the East Coast of the United States. Part of living in a coastal…

Lions Club speakers bureau ‘rotates’ in retired NASA engineer

0

By Carelyn Sheppard Donner Grigsby, a retired engineer from NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, explained numerous topics from hurricanes and global warming to space exploration and the universe to the Chester Lions Club recently. He said scientists constantly monitor the heat at certain depths under the African deserts for the earliest warnings and source of hurricanes, like Florence. He encouraged the audience to think in terms of a much larger, or universal, scale. People tend to think only in terms of the time and space immediately surrounding them, he said. He has a much larger view of things, including…

Historic trees are worth saving

I thank him and could not agree more with Jim Daniels’ letter to the Village News editor regarding the loss of Chester’s “Village Oak.” I also applaud his and Joe Hillier’s offer to pay for a professional arborist’s evaluation of this beloved tree in a valiant effort to save it. Such a certified expert would have advised that hollow trees can and do survive, even with ants. My wife and I proudly reside in “historic” Chester in front of this church, so it was just more of the same to us. We have witnessed the Methodist church’s developer-like approach to…

Her next race is the New York City Marathon, to be held Nov. 4. “It’s called Team in Training,” Moody said of her volunteer effort. “I told myself that if I’m running, I would want it to be worth something…

School board hears about transportation issues

0

Transportation problems were the focus of much of the discussion at last week’s Chesterfield school board meeting as at least eight people spoke about it during public comment. School district officials said the problems were related to a shortage of school bus drivers, including some who resigned in the two weeks before school started Sept. 4, and also as a result of implementing new start times and new bus routes. “It took two days to say transportation issues weren’t normal,” parent Erin Folkenroth said at the Sept. 12 evening meeting. She accused the district of “blatant lies” in regard to…
