County approves land purchase in Ettrick

0

By a 4-0 vote with James Holland absent, the county board of supervisors last week approved the purchase of a 1.75-acre parcel in Ettrick to support a new elementary school and fire station. The purchase price of $20,000 represented the assessed value of the land, according to the county’s real property manager, John Harmon. The land will be purchased from Stallings Oil Co. There was some confusion about how the agenda item was listed, but the county’s deputy administrator for community development, Bill Dupler, said that no buildings are planned for the property, which is located south of Chesterfield Avenue,…

Daugherty as its new superintendent during a special meeting last week. Daugherty plans to start in Chesterfield on Nov. 1 after moving from Wilmington, Del., where he has been superintendent of the Red Clay Consolidated School District since 2009. In remarks prior to the board voting to move forward with a contract and set Daugherty’s salary, school board chair John Erbach said that Daugherty was superintendent of the year in Delaware for the 2015-2016 school year. Erbach said Daugherty is committed…

An organization that’s been helping others recently received a hand. The Guardians HOPE Center, which has been providing food and services to the poor and veterans since February 2016, had help from more than 100 volunteers rehabilitating a building on its 39-acre campus last week. Half of a 7,154-square-foot building was flooded in January when a water pipe burst, said Chris Lane, who with his wife Stacy, founded the nonprofit Guardians Inc. in 2012. Lane said…

Speed is the key for Thomas Dale Knights

0

Thomas Dale turned in another great season last year, finishing 9-3 on the wings of changing their offense over to the Wing-T. The resulting offensive statistics were the most points they’ve scored in 15 years and the most yards rushed as a team. Although quarterback John Pierce was the leader that Kevin Tucker needed for the offense, the passing game never really clicked, so the air attack is a focus for the Knights. “We know with our type of offense that having a good play-action passing game will add an element to our offense,” Tucker said. “That’s something those teams…

Taylor ushers in a new era at L.C. Bird

0

Perhaps the biggest statement that a 7-4 L.C. Bird football team made last year was if that’s the worst season you’ve had in more than 15 years, things have been going pretty well. Under interim coach Tony Nicely the team played well last year, but it wasn’t the version of the Skyhawks to which we’ve grown accustomed. Now, with a familiar face in alum and coach Troy Taylor, L.C. Bird will look to continue its smash-mouth style of football. “My philosophy is the Bird philosophy,” Taylor said. “That’s to play tough, physical and smart football.” After losing five seniors to…

Love our neighbors as ourselves

This is one of the most difficult subjects that I have written about, but I believe that I need to try to tackle this. I dealt with suicide as a firefighter, and I deal with it as a pastor too. Suicide is a major issue in America. Statistics from the National Institutes of Health state the following from 2016: •Suicide was the tenth leading cause of death overall in the U.S., claiming the lives of nearly 45,000 people. •Suicide was the second leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 10 and 34. •Suicide is the fourth leading…
