Long-time Chester resident Ferne Schreffler celebrated her 100th birthday Saturday with a surprise visit by her 91-year-old sister, Lois Gruver. Bob and Ferne Schreffler lived in Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Utah before an employment opportunity for Bob brought the family to Chester in the spring of 1965. CBC falls in third round of World Series

CHESTERFIELD – Chesterfield Baseball Clubs narrowly lost in the third round of last week’s Bronco-11 World Series, falling to the eventual champions from Chicago. CBC won a first-round game over Ciudad Juarez, Mexico by a count of 6-5. Patrick Gibrall picked up the win, while infielder Dylan Meyer enjoyed a three-hit game. Four other players joined in with multi-hit games, as Conner Hedgepeth, Gabe Smith, Nolan Harris and Gibrall each had two base knocks. Dean Andrs, on left, recently traveled from Chester to Minneapolis with some of his family to visit his uncle, Bill Andrs, who is 88 years old and enjoys reading the Village News. Dean and family enjoyed fishing on several of the state’s 10,000 lakes and visiting relatives and friends. He brought home fish that will be enjoyed at a fish fry later this year.

Last week, a fire in a mansion claimed the life of a 13-year veteran firefighter in Maryland. The fire was caused by a lightning strike in the early hours of the morning. From what I understand, the family got out of the home safely before the arrival of fire units. Firefighters made an interior attack. I am not sure about the timeline, but a “may day” was declared once a firefighter had fallen through the floor. It sounds like this house had a basement.
