Paint out pollution

Last month, volunteers spent the day working with Art on Wheels and the James River Association, stencil-painting storm drains. The Paint Out Pollution project aims to increase awareness of storm water pollution and celebrate the native plant and animal species that call the James River home. Local artists created stencils that were used to place art on storm drains at the Chester, LaPrade, Meadowdale, and North Courthouse Road libraries. There are a number of different designs between the four locations. The River Otter is located at the Chester Library’s storm drain on Centre Street.

Halloween happenings

It was a dark and spooky night; the leaves were tumbling down the streets, following in the footsteps of all the children dancing through the night. It was Halloween, and the ghosts, goblins, and witches were out to get yummy treats. Tall and short, happy and scary, the children delighted in going door to door and politely asking “trick or treat” to each person who answered the door. I don’t think that I will ever tire of Halloween; it’s a magical night where anything is possible. We have been through the many stages of parenthood so far, and Halloween is…

A guest speaker during Bensley’s 22nd annual Veterans Day ceremony, Ret. Army 2nd Lt. James “Jimmy” Boehling gave a detailed account of an April 21, 1945 bombing mission he was on where the plane stalled and went down. Boehling alerted others on the crew, made a split decision to grab a parachute, and jumped out head-first. His face was burned by the slipstream, and he had forgotten to latch one side of the parachute. Luckily, while spiraling downward from 27,000 feet, he was able to latch and deploy it. It saved his life, as the plane went down loaded with…

To the Editor There was a revolution prior to ours in 1776. It was the one that put King William and Queen Mary on the throne of England and forced John II to flee England. It was during this revolution that the ember was created one that was transferred here to America and started the fire of liberty. In this revolution, there were three factions and three issues. But it was one faction and one issue that made up that ember. One group stood up against the belief of the divine right of kings to rule. John Locke, as a…

It’s that time

0

Though it was fifteen years ago, I remember the second Saturday of the 2002 black powder season like it was yesterday. It was a beautiful, crisp morning. I got to my stand just before first light, and I had great expectations for that morning. It was a requirement of our hunt club that you had to be in an elevated stand or an elevated position to black powder hunt. My stand for that morning was a wooden stand that rose above a creek in what was known as Upper Malvern. I saw the seat on the ground, but did not…
