Dogpound birthday

Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. In the last article I was telling you about my front door painting experience. One thing about painting…at least for me…is that I get a lot of paint on other things that I am not supposed to get paint on, and of course that includes me. Because of my tendencies I have some paint clothes I keep just for this occasion. However, I had some trouble locating my paint threads since I had a reorganization of my closets a few months ago and the box they were supposed to…

After firing up the onboard computer, the burly and bearded Minnesota native yanked the pull starter cable on his 6-horsepower Tohatsu motor. He twisted the the tiller-throttle into gear, lurching the custom-built 16-foot long, 8-foot wide cataraft boat up the Patuxent River and away from the pier at Jackson’s Landing in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. As the boat puttered along, passing marshes and piers — dilapidated and pristine — Ryan Abrahamsen, founder of 360-degree mapping company Terrain 360, pointed out a faint clicking overhead. “If you listen really close, you can hear it.” Abrahamsen pointed up at the six Canon cameras…

It’s like deja vu all over again for some Stoney Glen residents

Last month, the Economic Development Authority of Chesterfield announced its acquisition of 1,675 acres in south Chester (originally meant for residential use), which will be used to attract a large industrial manufacturing company that could bring 5,000 to 10,000 jobs and billions of dollars in investments to the county. Local residents, however, have been bristling at the construction of the proposed development and making their voices heard online and at the first of four open houses held to discuss the mega site. Robert Latino has been a resident of the Stoney Glen subdivision for 25 years and said the county…

A humbling journey

A s you read this article, I and my team are either stuck in an airport on the east coast of the United States, or we have just arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa. Stuck due to a hurricane, but hoping that we will be able to take off on time. This trip will mark my tenth journey to Africa since 2008. It has been such an awesome privilege to make this journey so many times. When I was in Botswana in 2008, I was standing with a missionary leader and asked him to help our church seek out an unreached,…

If you have been following this column, you may have noticed that I have been sticking to pretty tame subjects lately. My children, the weather, my moods, basically pretty banal stuff. We are living in a time where some of us feel that we cannot voice our opinions for fear of retribution from others. It’s a sad and frightening time for this country. I have always been very forthright with my opinions. I feel like we should treat each other as we wish to be treated. I feel like we should treat each other with respect, kindness, love, and acceptance.…
