It’s all about the micros

0

My last column was about knowing your plant’s diet. I focused on macronutrients then and this time I will focus on micronutrients. As I indicated previously, all nutrients are important, each has its specific purpose, and having the soil tested is critical for successful gardening. Micronutrients, in order of need by most plants include iron, chlorine, manganese, boron, zinc, copper, and molybdenum. The nutrient cobalt is also needed, but the amount is not known. Research is being done on cobalt as well as the other nutrients. Micronutrients are critical in the photosynthesis process. Photosynthesis is where light from the sun,…

Atlantic Septembers

S eptember has historically been the height of hurricane season, in the Atlantic Ocean. We continue to watch the heroic efforts of many in Texas as they continue to operate in the rescue or life safety mode of the operation. Tropical systems are wind events, rain events, or both. Hurricane Harvey was both, with sustained winds of 130 mph and gusts as high as 155 mph, but now we are seeing the devastating effects of a system that has dumped over 50 inches of rain. The emergent aspect of this storm will continue as long as people are in harm’s…

Summer internship focused on energy

Following in your parents’ footsteps in Chesterfield these days looks a lot different compared to a generation ago. For Matoaca High School graduate Nick Skoff, it means pursuing a career in electrical engineering, a field in which both his parents work. Skoff always knew he was mechanically-inclined. As a child, he wanted to know how his computer worked, and he was drawn to Lego bricks and toys that taught him the basics of engineering. “I had a little robotics set where you could build something and program it, and that’s where I got my first interest in electricity and what…

Dale beats Bird, takes back Battle of Chester

0

When people think about real football, they think about a cold, rainy, smash-mouth type of football game being played on a wet and muddy field. Well, Friday night at Thomas Dale’s Ed Karpus Field, there was an abundance of high school football aroma. Both L.C. Bird and Thomas Dale played what seemed to be just a running back show of power. The Knights won 36-6 after eight straight losses to the Skyhawks in their annual game. “This win means a lot to the community and to the kids,” said Thomas Dale coach Kevin Tucker. “We have wanted this one for…

A BIG FISH STORY

0

A young fisherman from the Chester area used his bare hands to catch a fighting 32-inch northern pike at Lake Vermilion in northeastern Minnesota. Kalob Powell, 18, was checking his fish on a stringer hanging from a dock and spotted the predatory pike with its jaws clamped on one of them. He reached down, grabbed the big sharp-toothed fish, and pulled it free. “I was confused because I didn’t expect it,” he said. “I put my right hand in his gills to lift him onto the dock.” Powell didn’t have a fish scale, but various length-to-weight conversion charts indicate that…
