Obelisk, cross, no entry

The Henricus bluff before the development of Henricus Historical Park. Circa 1980. The monument commemorates the first hospital in America and the Varina parish wish eventually became Saint john’s church. At Henricus Historical Park, the church famous for Patrick Henry’s “give me liberty or give me death” speech is commemorated with a cross. An obelisk near it commemorates the first university in the colonies that would become the United States. ” I came to work for Henrico County in 1977 and I was an assistant county manager. We reorganized in ‘78 and I became deputy county manager,” said George…

THAT WAS THEN: Chester Methodist Parsonage

0

The Chester Methodist parsonage was located at 12020 Winfree St. This two-story frame hip-roofed house, built around 1895 faced the former Chester Methodist Church rather than the street. As described in Jeffrey O’Dell’s “Chesterfield County Early Architecture and Historic Sites,” the dwelling has a three-bay front with floor length windows, an asymmetrical five-bay lateral façade, and wraparound Eastlake verandas on the front and west sides. Erected as a residence for Methodist ministers, the dwelling served as such until a new parsonage was built on Percival Street in 1925. Today, the dwelling houses several apartments. It continues to face a…

School Board choose prototype design for middle schools

0

The Chesterfield County School Board recently adopted a prototype design for middle schools that will be built in the future. The new replacement of Manchester Middle construction project is part of the bond referendum overwhelmingly approved by Chesterfield County voters in 2013. Six companies submitted design proposals. RRMM Architects was awarded the contract for its two-story design of almost 134,000 square feet that will accommodate 1,100 middle school students. The prototype is easily site adaptive and is the same prototype of the recently constructed Georgie Tyler Middle School in Isle of Wight County.    “We are excited to be one…

There’s no fighting back for Enon Elementary

0

Enon Elementary School has been on the chopping block since the most recent bond referendum allowed the funding for the schools replacement. While the jaws of the excavator crunch on the sides of the old gymnasium it is a metaphor for the future and the opening of a new school at the same location. The students will have to spendsome at Marguarite Christian, but a new school when some return will be less crowded and more open, clean and young. Nostalgia is always present and parents of students and students who attended Enon years ago want memories to hold.

Family Ties

This past weekend, I drove my family down to Lowland, N.C. Lowland is a very small community on Goose Creek Island and it is where my family (paternal) settled hundreds of years ago. Lowland is an interesting little place. The land is flat, flat, flat, and there are creeks and canals on either side of you while you drive down. Houses that once sat on regular foundations have now been elevated on pilings due to the constant threat of flooding that has become increasingly worse as the years have passed. Our family’s home has not been elevated, and it is…

Entrepreneurship on the Village Green

0

Charlotte and Henry Sawyer recently set up shop on the Village Green selling lemonade, water, and fans. They knew they were the perfect products to sell for the 90-degree plus days the community has been experiencing. Bottled water or a cup of lemonade sold for five cents and fans were going for 10 cents. Henry said their purpose was “just to get some money to buy toys.” The reason drinks were so reasonable, Charlotte said, “We are trying to get as many customers as we can and some people were even giving us a dollar for water.”
