Raising a child isn’t easy. But for John and Regina Bowen, things have been a tad more difficult. After years of cardiologist visits, their son, former Matoaca and Trinity Episcopal quarterback Blake Bowen, discovered that he needed emergency heart surgery last week — in a successful procedure called a catheter ablation — doctors fixed two electrical issues in Blake’s heart. “It was the worst six days in my entire life,” Regina Bowen said. “I cried more in those days than I have in my 44 years on earth.” Her husband agreed. “When you get a call about your child with…

Chesterfield County’s own Liberty Bell

0

An iron bell no larger than a foot in diameter called court to session in 1749. The courthouse bell, 268 years old, was mounted on the top of the roof that graced the front porch of the house of law. It was hung from a three sided support and off-center in relation to the front door because the bell didn’t move, only the clapper inside, so the rope to the bell would be in the way of the door. The bell warned not only of a trial, but of sentencing, too. When the contract to build the old courthouse was…

Bruce Paterson – Construction Tradesman Terrific Teachers a series part 3

0

How many washers will six pieces of spaghetti spanning two cups hold? This is a good question, and it’s one Bruce Peterson asks his “Geometry in Construction” class at Carver College and Career Academy, where he has been teaching for the last five years. Until this year, Patterson has been teaching construction trades, and geometry was only a side subject, taught in a small room off the carpentry class, to teach carpentry students the geometry needed to square a wall or cut a rafter. This year he has teamed with the school’s geometry teacher to offer this new course. Students…

Spring Sniffles

0

Spring has finally arrived, and while my soul rejoices, allergies are wreaking havoc on the Lashley household. My sweet flower has it the worst. Her skin literally reacts to pollen, and she is covered in eczema from head to toe. Her poor eyes have a raccoon mask of dry, flaky skin around them, and she is on a very strict regimen of antihistamines, creams, oils, bath concoctions, and eye drops. Thankfully, the rainy, cold weather we are having this week is improving her condition. I began noticing little red bumps appearing in the crooks of her elbows and knees. They…

Participants in the event included Mahone’s Forge Historical Productions, Henricus Militia, History Inc. / The Press Gang (musical performances, candle making, period children’s games), Wolf Creek…

LETTERS: New ordinance amendment limiting cat “ownership”

0

To the Editor: Many caring citizens in our county and elsewhere spend many hours and dollars caring for other people’s cast-off cats, or ferals as many people like to describe them. Most of these cats began their lives as pets, but, because they became inconvenient, scratched the furniture, or outgrew “kitten cuteness,” were thrown outside or abandoned elsewhere to fend for themselves. Many of these former pets were not spayed or neutered, either by the shelter that offered them for adoption, like our county shelter, or by their new owners. Once abandoned, they then began producing kittens who were not…
