A diamond jubilee for local restaurant

0

Last month they celebrated 75 years of continuous operation of the Half Way House with many of their long-time customers and staff. Specials guests were the Benders’ daughter-in-law Joan, her son Jay, and Jay’s daughter Samatha. Along with select items that have been on the menu for 75 years, like filet mignon, baked ham, veal cutlet, and fried chicken, the Youngs served a traditional drink from the Benders’ menu, Claret Lemonade as well as their own famous tradition, cinnamon rolls. The house and restaurant remain in their original form. A log cabin on the back of the property serves as…

TRAINING DAYS A word from Rick Gray

0

COMMENTARY By Rick Gray I couldn’t possibly catch my old readers up on over a year of my life, so if you’ll permit me, I’ll narrow it down to the first nine days of March, which I might call “Training Days.” On March 1, I flew to Denver, where I joined a thousand other volunteers from 32 countries for three days of training by Al Gore and his Climate Reality team. As soon as we “graduated,” I caught a red-eye to West Palm Beach to see my St. Louis Cardinals play three spring training games. A bucket list thing. Then,…

Camp Baker summer program focuses on fun

0

It is hard to believe that when Quarese, now 19, began attending Camp Baker years ago, he was shy and introverted. Especially since nowadays he says what he enjoys most about camp is talking to the staff and making friends with them. Quarese also enjoys other Camp Baker activities including horseback riding, boating at Pocahontas State Park, and participating in the weekly talent show. Summer overnight sessions for 2017 for adults with disabilities ages 18 and up are: June 18 – June 23; June 25 – June 30; July 16 – July 21; July 23 – July 28; July 30…

Can Sponsler pierce 27 years of Cox’s armor?

0

Katie Sponsler is not a name that comes to mind when you are talking politics. Until 2015, she was busy serving her country in other ways. She is still taken aback by being described as a politician, “I don’t feel like a politician,” she said. Sponsler worked for 15 years in several government agencies. She served 11 years in the United States Air Force as an aircraft armaments specialist, completed a combat tour in Afghanistan and Guam, served with the Ohio State Police and most recently she received a commission as a Park Ranger from the National Park Service. She…

Romance beyond 60

0

Self-described hopeless romantic Ken Davis never thought he would fall in love again. At 61, he had been married twice; his first marriage ended in divorce, and he was made a widower with his second. But he did find true love again, and he wanted his bride-to-be to have a fairy-tale wedding. Judy Bailey, also 61, and Davis were married Saturday in a formal church service with bridesmaids and groomsmen, a flower girl and a ring bearer, and a horse-drawn carriage with two coachmen in waiting. “Ken planned the carriage, from Hundley Carriages,” Judy said. “He kind of wanted me…

Comic Con draws big crowd

0

Spiderman stepped aside so Darth Vader could get through the milling crowd. At the check-out desk of the Meadowdale Library, Princess Leia scanned books for patrons. Stormtroopers, super heroes, and all kinds of characters one could imagine wondered about. It was the Meadowdale Library annual Comic Con and the community responded by attending by the hundreds. The event not only gave one the opportunity for “Cosplay,” the art of dressing up as a character from a movie, book or video game, but vendors of many kinds were on hand with items such as graphic novels, comic books, food and more.…
