L.C. Bird Conference 12 champions with game-winning shot

Bird got its revenge, Friday defeating Varina 61-58, on a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Mario Haskett to become the Conference 12 boys’ champions. The Skyhawks controlled the lead most of the game with a fast-paced second quarter and aggressive defense. Despite this, the Blue Devils were able to stay in the game down to the final seconds. With the game tied at 58 and five seconds remaining, the ball was inbounded to Pinky Wiley, who got it to Haskett, for the deep, contested, game-winning shot.…

His team competed at the regional meet in Hampton over the weekend and did not disappoint. A.J. Lazaro broke the school record in the 55 meter hurdles, running 7.55 seconds and took fourth place in the event. Lazaro also finished fourth in the triple jump. Lions Club annual Bland Music Scholarship competition

The Hopewell Lions Club will hold their annual Bland Music Scholarship Competition March 26, 2 p.m. at Powers Memorial Baptist Church in Hopewell. There will be two divisions: vocal and instrumental. Prizes the local level will be $100 for first place winners and $50 for second place winners. Semolina: the noun that won the county spelling bee

This year’s top speller in Chesterfield County Public Schools is Mary Grace Walsh, an eighth-grade student at Robious Middle. She won the countywide spelling bee Feb. 8, topping a field of 18 Chesterfield students. The spelling bee runner-up is Kamryn Plowden, a seventh-grade student at Midlothian Middle. The spelling bee lasted nine rounds, and it featured 13 students from middle schools and five from elementary schools. Mary Grace correctly spelled semolina to win the competition, and she will represent Chesterfield County Public Schools in the regional spelling bee March 11 at the Library of Virginia.
