Holiday Journey

0

As we come to this special time of the year, many of us will be traveling around the corner, across the state, or across the country. I want you to be prepared as you strike out on that holiday journey. Motor vehicle accidents account for many injuries and deaths each year. Some may say I am the safest driver on the road. What about the other drivers on the road? Others may be traveling on an airplane. Whatever the case, what is your travel plan? Let’s start with those traveling by air. Give yourself plenty of time in the airport.…

Scout with eyes on Eagle rank designs sensory garden for Curtis

0

By Jennifer Swartz Justin Farren, a senior at Cosby High School and a member of Troop 2860, designed and constructed a sensory garden for C.E. Curtis Elementary School as part of his Eagle Scout “journey.” The project includes two sensory boards, a tree cookie walking path, and three play tables that can be filled with sand, water, or soil. The sensory boards include items that appeal to the senses and build fine and gross motor skills. The Eagle Scout project is the capstone of a scouting journey.  The scout must demonstrate leadership, proper planning, and financial responsibility, and the project…

Gentlemen of the Creek has ties to success

0

Imagine being a middle-school boy when Gov. McAuliffe gives you a tie to add to your wardrobe, or Attorney General Mark Herring, or police chief Thierry Dupuis, maybe an engineer or a man from one of many other successful professions. The tie is yours to keep and proudly wear, a reminder that you, a young gentleman advancing in his education, can be successful, too. At Falling Creek Middle School, the Gentleman of the Creek, offers such a program. The tie is symbolic, a reminder, and the program’s purpose is to offer academic support, inspire and mentor selected boys from sixth,…

L.C. Bird 27 Hermitage 24 by Zach Long The No. 3 seed L.C. Bird traveled to No. 2 seed Hermitage Friday night for a second round showdown in the 5A South playoffs. The Skyhawks emerged victorious, winning 27-24. Hermitage seemed to hold a mental edge towards the end of the first half. Up 17-14, quarterback James Carney had already thrown two touchdowns to Nasir Hines. The junior backup QB held his own in his first start, with signal-caller Woody Winborn sidelined by injury. The Hermitage defense forced three straight punts as well, and L.C. Bird was struggling on offense. That…

Thankful Dogpound

0

Hello and welcome back to the thankful Dogpound. Yes, it is that time again when we get around to being thankful…not that we are not thankful throughout the year…but at this time of the year we put it front and center. If not …we should. I know the elections this year were kind of like that jack-in- the-box toy [do they still make them?]; the one where you crank the handle around and around as it plays this little melody which I believe was “Pop goes the Weasel,” and after so many turns a puppet pops up. Many of you…

NEVER TOO OLD TO LEARN: Shepherds Center keeps seniors young

By Danielle Ozbat When Sandra Mayes retired from her job, she and her cousin went on the hunt for something to do. Since her cousin lives in Midlothian and she lives in Prince George, she said the pair wanted to find a place where they could meet in the middle in order to spend the day together. “When I retired, I was looking for something to do, my cousin retired at the same time … so we were looking for something that we could spend a day together and meet in the middle,” Mayes said. “That’s how we found the…
