Remember When: Centralia

Built in 1904 and still in operation in 1930 when this photo was taken, the rail crossing at Centralia Road and CSX (Seaboard Railroad) was a local rail stop. The double tracks were convenient to keep the trains on time. A gas station and general store was located adjacent to the store. Centralia was quite a village at the time. Several grand houses aligned the road on its way to Chesterfield Courthouse. Those who had business to do at the courthouse would take the train to Centralia and then travel by carriage or horse to the Courthouse.

Heavy holiday traffic expected near Amazon

CHESTERFIELD — Motorists should expect increased traffic in the area around the Amazon Fulfillment Center on Meadowville Technology Parkway beginning Sunday, and continuing through the holiday season. The traffic pattern will be similar to last year and motorists should allow extra time to get through the area during shift changes. The business will begin its peak season staffing ramp-up on Sunday, and traffic will increase as the workforce increases. Chesterfield County’s Transportation Department is working closely with the police department and Amazon to mitigate the impact on traffic. Kenneth Venable and his wife, Gene, back to the area as Presiding Elder and First Lady. He will serve under the leadership of Bishop W. Darin Moore, Presiding Prelate of Mid Atlantic Episcopal District. Venable is a native of Baltimore, and a graduate of Morgan State University. He is no stranger to the Petersburg community. Casey visits club

Dr. Joseph P. Casey, County Administrator, spoke at the regular meeting of the Woman’s Club of Chester on Nov. 7. He was introduced by Sarah Snead, Deputy County Supervisor for Human Services and Dorothy Jaeckle, our Bermuda District Supervisor. Since November is Cultural Arts Awareness Month, Dr. Casey focused on the importance of the new Baxter Perkins Center for the Arts which will break ground very soon. This project has been the pet project for Betty Matthews for many years.

ocal HS art student win awards at State Fair Chesterfield County Public Schools students from the Chesterfield Career and Technical Center at Courthouse won numerous awards in the Virginia State Fair Youth Arts and Crafts contest. Nineteen students from Chesterfield County Public Schools entered artwork into the competition. Four students won or tied for first place in their categories in the electronic media portion of the contest, and one student received the Best in Division honor for an original computer illustration. Matoaca’s Beach twins to swim for University of Florida

Family and friends gathered in the Matoaca High School library to congratulate Ethan and Clark Beach on signing their letters of intent to attend and swim for the University of Florida, Gainesville. Ethan and Clark swim for Richmond’s Quest swim team and both competed in the U.S. Olympic trials in Omaha last summer. Clark just returned from Japan where he represented the U.S. National Junior team. Both young men are coached by Dudley Duncan and John Smithson and specialize in the 100 and 200 meter backstroke events. To date, neither Ethan nor Clark has declared a college major. The Chesterfield-Colonial Heights 2016 Christmas Mother, Debbie Koller, hosted the 9th annual auction last Saturday at the Cultural Center of India. 350 tickets were sold for this fabulous night of bidding. Over $48,000 was raised to ensure families in need in our community experience the magic of Christmas. Bonnie Cauthorn shared her design talent to create a beautiful, festive décor.
