Chesterfield’s reading SOL pass rates keep rising
0CHESTERFIELD – Reading pass rates on state-mandated Standards of Learning tests continue to increase across Chesterfield County Public Schools, according to 2015-16 school year data released by the Virginia Department of Education. Student pass rates on all reading SOL tests increased another 2 percentage points from the 2014-15 school year and have increased by 7 percentage points since the 2013-14 school year. With an 84 percent pass rate for all students, Chesterfield County Public Schools reading pass rate is 4 percentage points higher than the state average. County fair offering more attractions than ever before
0CHESTERFIELD – Brenda White, General Manager of the Chesterfield County Fair, said she is excited about this year’s fair, not because there are more rides on the midway, because of the fried Oreos, or because of the contest for largest pumpkin. The list of performances and activities is what makes second year manager White, smile ear to ear. “I started on the Board of Directors in 2011 as the Pageant Director,” she said. Mary Chalkley has dedicated 50 years to Chesterfield County Fair
0Dedication and loyalty are the two words that come to mind when members of the Chesterfield County Fair Association think of Mary Chalkley. As a life-long resident of the area, Mary’s roots are well established in Chesterfield. Mary Perkinson Chalkley was born in 1937, the tenth of eleven children born to Daniel and Annie Perkinson. She was raised on a farm in Matoaca, attended Ettrick Elementary School, and graduated from Thomas Dale High School in 1955. Mary’s mom was a 4-H leader for 38 years, oversaw 4-H displays at the fair, and fostered Mary’s association with the fair. One year…
Police arrest suspected drug trafficker
0A Florida man, pulled over on Interstate 95 last week, was suspected of drug trafficking and arrested for: distribution of marijuana; transporting controlled substances; manufacturing, selling, giving, and distributing a controlled substance. One hundred thirty-one pounds of marijuana was confiscated.
Police seek robbery suspects
0Two men robbed the 7-Eleven at 10121 Chester Road last week at about 12:50 a.m. Police said the two men entered the business, displayed a handgun and demanded money. The suspects stole cigarettes and cash from the business. Suspects are described as black males, about 5 feet 8 inches tall. Both wore hoodies and a gray bandanna covering their faces.

0Matoaca’s James W. “Jim” Seay was considered the area’s river expert. In a 1954 Progress-Index newspaper article, and he said he got all his happiness in his life from what God created, the rivers, the hills, the woods, and those things.
