Cooling Off

0

Cool trickling water, ice cubes clinking in a glass, waterfalls spraying a fine cool mist, the first crisp morning when you know fall is approaching; we all could use a little cool-off right about now. I will tell you that I absolutely hate the heat, and this week is horrifying. When the heat index gets above 88 degrees, I’m done. It’s gotten so miserable that my children have turned into whining, blithering, limp-as-a-noodle, fighting-like-cats and dogs monsters. I just can’t stand it any longer. The three of us have spent every waking minute with each other, and of course my…

Miracle on the Corner

Bluegrass music, a silent auction and an ice cream social will be part of Miracle Sunday at Chester Presbyterian Church this Sunday concluding a 12-week Miracle on the Corner mission to raise funds for much needed repairs at the church. Gordon B. Mapes, III, pastor of the church, tells the story of the miracle of how Jesus feeds 5,000 from Luke 9:16: “Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people.” That was the message Mapes delivered to…

Beating the heat

0

It is hot! It takes no genius to come to this conclusion. The question is what are you doing to beat the heat? Most of you may have figured out how to acclimate to this extreme heat and high humidity. Hydration is vital in these days. You should be drinking proper fluids, even when you do not want to. Keep in mind that you must drink them in order to prevent dehydration. Drinks containing caffeine are not helpful in keeping you hydrated. Water is the best, and sports drinks are helpful in moderation. The progression of heat-related illnesses is heat…

Community, police have opportunity to bond at National Night Out

0

An opportunity is coming on Aug. 2, throughout Chesterfield County, for the community to meet, become acquainted and form bonds with police officers, right in their own neighborhoods. Police Officials say that National Night Out is an opportunity to 1) Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; 2)Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime efforts; 3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and 4) Send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. “Chesterfield County Police Department has been participating in National Night Out since at least 1988,” said Elizabeth Caroon, spokesman for Chesterfield County…

Local “miracle” worker combines hope and community

0

After witnessing a young man steal food from a convenience store for his family in 2012, Melissa Morgan immediately began her mission to help feed community members living in poverty. Focusing on the corridor along Jefferson Davis Highway, Morgan and her husband worked from the back of their truck, delivering bread every Sunday to families living in various motels along Route 1. Soon thereafter, they began to distribute backpacks with school supplies as well, ever expanding their operation. Once she realized that “this was getting big,” Morgan moved her acts of kindness to a permanent location in November 2014, creating…
