Dutch Gap vultures not out of the woods yet

0

To some, the vultures claiming Dutch Gap as their rest and roost area are a nuisance. To others, the protected birds are a treasurer. They have been a source of controversy for years. Chesterfield County renewed a contract on July 1 with USDA Wildlife Division that allows for the monitoring, harassing and – if the county deems it necessary – even euthanasia of the birds. The two species of vultures that have called Dutch Gap home for decades are the black and turkey vultures. Vultures are not predators; they are scavengers and feed on carrion. The Dutch Gap area offers…

LC Bird bigman receives first college offer

0

Attending a high school (L.C Bird) stockpiled with college basketball prospects, it would make sense that forward Tyrek Williams plays for a prospect-laden AAU team: the River City Reign. The 6-8, 205-pound rising junior picked up his first offer which came from the Division I school, Mount St. Mary’s. News of the offer came from River City Reign’s twitter account – @RiverCityReign. To a casual sports fan, Williams name may not ring a bell. The younger brother of 2016 L.C. Bird graduate and hoopster Tahkey Williams missed all of last season with a broken bone in his leg. That being…

Interest in Wiley, Falden gaining steam this summer

As the summer wears on, there may not be a hotter sports story in South Chesterfield than the collective heat that L.C. Bird boys’ basketball is generating on the recruiting trail. In addition to Tyrek Williams, two other Skyhawks have picked up recent offers in Johquin “Pinky” Wiley and 5A State Player of the Year Charles Falden. Wiley, a rising senior, has been the recipient of two mid-major offers and added Campbell University of the Big South Conference to his tally this past week. Previous offers came in from Longwood and James Madison. L.C. Bird’s point guard, Wiley plays his…

Fruity tomatoes in the Dogpound

0

Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound.  With summer, come visions of fresh veggies from the garden or from the local farmer’s market.  I don’t have a garden now… too many pests to fight off, but I do have six potted tomato plants that I keep up close to the garage away from prying eyes and mouths.  They are primarily cherry tomatoes, and the first few have ripened and been devoured.  There is nothing like a tomato right off the bush.  As a footnote, tomatoes are actually a fruit, but in 1893 the Supreme Court ruled…
