What’s in your basement

0

A recent fire in a single family dwelling, started in the basement. The fire did extensive damage to the entire house. At this point, the only thing that I have read is that the fire was determined to be accidental, which says a lot. This takes the intentional component out of this equation, including a child or children playing with fire. I do not know if I can touch on every accidental cause in a basement, but my desire is to get you thinking, especially if your home has a basement. On arrival at this fire, units found heavy fire…

MATOACA 2020 record: 5-5 Matoaca finished the season 5-5, improving again in Jay Parker’s second year as head coach. Narrowly missing the playoffs, a talented group of seniors along with a good influx of youth has the potential to be one of the best Matoaca teams in recent memory. Seniors such as Nathan Dozier, Brayden Spade, Marcus Dreher, Juleon Pointer, Jimmy Hayden, Brendan Gray, and Shaun Kindred all moved on to the college level, and their contributions will be missed. “In 2019, we definitely took steps forward as a program,” said Parker. “We played a lot of younger guys and…

Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. As I am writing this article it is the first week of February. February already?! Wow! January just flew by and winter is just now really starting to set in. This weekend starts a very cold week, with Sunday (Super Bowl Sunday) starting with a high of only 11 degrees. Only 11 degrees! And the rest of the week does not get over 20 degrees. Brrrr! Anyway, I had the opportunity to fly back to North Carolina thise past weekend to participate in my oldest daughter’s, first child, “gender…

Chase sues state Senate after censure

0

On Feb. 1, state Sen. Amanda Chase (R) filed a federal lawsuit against the state Senate and its clerk after she was recently censured by the Senate. The civil rights complaint was filed in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia in Richmond. On Feb. 6, Chase noted that Judge Robert E. Payne had already held two hearings on the case with a trial scheduled for March 17. Chase was hopeful of a good outcome, noting that Payne was nominated to the seat by then-President George H.W. Bush on Nov. 20, 1991. Payne was unanimously confirmed by the…

Senate censures Chase; removes her seniority

By a vote of 24-9 with six abstentions, the Virginia Senate censured Chesterfield Sen. Amanda Chase on Jan. 27. It was only the second time in state history that a senator has been censured. The first was Sen. Peter K. Babalas (D-Norfolk) in 1987 for unethical conduct. That vote was 25-14. The censure of Chase was for failure to uphold her oath of office, misuse of office and conduct unbecoming a senator. Three Republicans — Tommy Norment of James City County, Bryce Reeves of Spotsylvania County and Jill Vogel of Fauquier County — joined all 21 Democrats in voting for…

In a dark world, be the light

Not today. Just two little words, but possibly the most powerful words you can say to someone contemplating suicide. Alicia Amsler, owner of Alicia’s Salon and Day Spa in Chesterfield Meadows Shopping Center became well acquainted with depression and suicide in her personal life and at work. Her mother went into a deep depression after heart surgery that lasted for five years. “It was a difficult time for our family, because we didn’t know the signs of mental illness at that time,” said Amsler. “We just wanted her to get better, but she didn’t seem to respond to anything we…
