Chesterfield Resident to Begin Pre-Service Training in Peace Corps

Casey Paige Beckner, 22, of Chesterfield has been accepted into the Peace Corps and will be departing for Samoa on October  7 to begin pre-service training as a community education Peace Corps Volunteer. Upon graduation from volunteer training in January, Beckner will be working to improve the literacy of local teachers, identifying need in the community, and designing projects to meet that need.

Beckner is the daughter of Elizabeth and Milo Beckner, and a graduate of Maggie Walker Governor’s School in Richmond. She then attended the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., where she earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, graduating in 2009. 

“I really wanted to expand my understanding of the world and challenge myself in real world ways,” says Beckner of her decision to join the Peace Corps.
Beckner joins the 351 Virginia residents currently serving in the Peace Corps. More than 6,498 Virginia residents have served in the Peace Corps since 1961.
