The Chester Kiwanis held its first annual Chester Kiwanis 5K over the weekend, with Harrison Wood named the overall winner, finishing in 17:40. The race attracted about 150 runners to Linear Park from the region, and the race was a very successful event, according to president of the club, Thomas Sokol.
“The club [Chester Kiwanis Club] was very proud to present this race opportunity to the community,” said Sokol. “But the club is even more proud of what the money goes towards.”
Proceeds from the Chester Kiwanis 5K help to fund scholarships at Chester Community and Thomas Dale High Schools. Proceeds also go to CCHASM, Christmas Mothers, Bensley/Bermuda Volunteer Rescue Squad, the YMCA of Chester and to other charities through the Chester Kiwanis Club.
The Chester Kiwanis Club is dedicated to saving one child and one community at a time. They are roughly 40 members strong and are always looking to increase their membership.
Noelle Grosso, organizer, attributes much of the success of the race to the community and sponsors.
