Skyhawks rally, win regionals, advance, will go to state.

** NOTE: Skyhawks continues playoff roll on Varina, won its first Central Region Division 6 championship. This article reports on the 16 game agains Heritage.

The third time was a charm for the L.C. Bird Skyhawks against Hermitage in the post-season. The defending state champions came into the game against Bird with a perfect 10-0 record and a 34 game winning streak against the Central Region in tact. Bird rallied back from down 20-10 using the last eight minutes of the game to win 24-20 and advance to the regional championship to play Varina this Friday night.

Paul Robertson led the way statistically for Bird with 210 yards rushing on 33 carries and a touchdown to cut the led to 20-17 with 6:40 remaining; however, it was big time passing plays in the fourth quarter from quarterback Terrance Ervin that allowed the Skyhawks to win as Ervin hit Zack Levine for a 24-yard touchdown pass with just 2:50 left in the game.

The Bird defense remained stingy allowing Hermitage standout running back Derrick Green to just 78 yards on the ground. Green is a nationally renowned recruit with offers from Oregon, Auburn, Michigan and several other major D-I programs.

The win against Hermitage snapped their 34-game win streak against the Central Region but also a two-game losing streak for the Skyhawks against the Panthers, as Hermitage defeated Bird 10-0 in the Regional Final last year, and 17-14 in the first round of the playoffs in 2010. Bird’s last win over Hermitage came in 2004 in the Regional Final.

This is the second L.C. Bird team to advance to 11-0 in school history and they will look to knock-off a Varina team that they defeated in the first round last season by a 21-16 count. The game will be at Varina High School, with the kick-off slated for 7:30 p.m.
Special thanks are in order for Skyhawks alum Tim Holmes for providing us with live updates during the game.
