Six additional Chesterfield teachers have achieved National Board certification, which is one of the highest credentials in education, and three of Chesterfield’s National Board Certified Teachers have renewed their certification. The new NBCTs were honored during a regional pinning ceremony on Jan. 10 at Virginia Commonwealth University in the Singleton Center for the Performing Arts.

A total of 100 National Board Certified Teachers are now working in Chesterfield County Public Schools; 83 are teachers and 17 hold other positions, including principal, assistant principal and technology integrator. Here are the school system’s newest NBCTs:

• Cathy Cauthorn, language arts teacher at Tomahawk Creek Middle
• Hunter Clark, history teacher at Clover Hill High
• Karen Dunsmore, who teaches students with autism at Carver Middle
• Karen Johnson, math teacher at Elizabeth Davis Middle
• Roger Lattimer, math teacher at Cosby High
• Meghan Whitney, first-grade teacher at Jacobs Road Elementary

Here are the teachers who renewed their certifications:

• Katharine Lehman, Thomas Dale High librarian, who earned certification in 2003
• Pamela Rockenbach Plahs, Swift Creek Middle history teacher, who earned certification in 2003
• Nicole Winter, Cosby High history teacher, who earned certification in 2003

National Board certification is considered the gold standard for excellence in teaching. A voluntary assessment program designed to develop, recognize and retain accomplished teachers, National Board certification is achieved through a performance-based assessment that typically takes one to three years to complete.
