Chesterfield county partners with 19 other regional localities on homeland security

At its Dec. 12 meeting, the Chesterfield County’s Board of Supervisors approved the receipt and appropriation of 2012 State Homeland Security Grant Funds from the Department of Homeland Security. The county will manage the regional project for the Central Virginia All-Hazards Incident Management Team, which is comprised of 17 area counties and the cities of Hopewell, Petersburg and Richmond.

The $60,000 grant will be used for training activities and operational support for the Incident Management Team, which works to ensure that the region is prepared to respond to a wide range of natural and man-made hazardous situations.

“Chesterfield County is pleased to serve as the program manager for the Central Virginia All-Hazards Incident Management Team,” said County Administrator Jay Stegmaier.

“This important cooperative venture is one of more than 160 regional partnerships in which Chesterfield County participates, including many in law enforcement, health, recreation, economic development, transportation and a host of others that either are not widely known or that seem to get forgotten in the midst of periodic discussions of one or two specific projects.”

Chesterfield County’s Chief of Police, Colonel Thierry Dupuis, said, “Past activations of the Incident Management Team have helped fight wildfires in New Mexico and locally, assisted New Kent County following Hurricane Irene in 2011. Fire and law-enforcement personnel from state and local agencies in Central Virginia are part of this capable and ready team.”

Chesterfield County Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department Chief Loy Senter said, “We are proud of the collaborative nature in which this group works. In respect to jurisdictional boundaries, they have essentially erased the borders when managing major emergency incidents.  These funds will provide the valuable training to ensure these dedicated members are prepared to make our communities safe.”

The team is a sub-group of the Urban Area Security Initiative that is under the auspices of the federal Department of Homeland Security.
