Shortly before 3 a.m. on Sunday morning, a Chesterfield County police officer stopped to checkout what he initially believed to be a disabled motorist on the onramp to southbound Chippenham Parkway from Hull Street Road. Upon approaching the vehicle, the officer discovered the driver to be the suspect in the larceny of a cash drawer which had been reported stolen approximately ten minutes earlier.
The officer attempted to take the driver into custody and the suspect resisted. A struggle ensued for the officer’s handgun. While struggling for control of the firearm, the officer was able to fire his handgun, striking the suspect. The suspect died at the scene.
The officer was treated and released for non-life threatening injuries at a local hospital and has been temporarily assigned to a non-enforcement position while the incident is being investigated.
The suspect has been indentified as Frankie Pitt, 45, of the 3700 block of Cottrell Road in Richmond, Virginia.
Police continue their investigation; anyone with any information should contact the Chesterfield County Police 748-1251.
