Knights top Warriors in Central District tennis playoff match

In a closely fought race all season in boy’s tennis, Thomas Dale Knights and Matoaca Warriors were crowned Co-Central District Champions for the 2013 season. The Warriors had the edge in the standings for most of the year, but split the regular season series with the Knights. A third match was played last Friday to decide regional seeding, and Thomas Dale won 6-3 to gain a top seed in the Central Region tournament.

The Knights share of the district championship marked the sixth straight season they have at least shared the district crown, as they have won the past five district titles. In the tiebreaker for regional seeding the Knights singles winners were No. 3 Min Im, No. 4 Shahbaz Mughal and No. 6 Neil Schindell. Thomas Dale won all three doubles match-ups. The Knights will head into the postseason with a record of 15-3 overall and 15-1 in the Central District.

The share of the district championship is the first championship for boys’ tennis in Matoaca school history. In the tiebreaker for regional seeding, the Warriors were led by No. 1 seed Austin Powers, who won his match in the regional seeding match 8-6 after being down 5-1 to Dale No. 1 seed R.D. Nixon. Warriors No. 2 seed Brandon Harper defeated Knights No. 2 seed Philip Crouch in another grind-it-out match-up. No. 5 Max Croston also won for Matoaca. The Warriors head to the region with a 15-2 overall record and a 13-2 Central District record.

The Knights will host Midlothian in the first round of the region tournament while the Warriors will travel to Cosby to kick off their postseason. Match times and dates as of press time TBD.
