L.C. Bird FCCLA comes home a winner from State Leadership and Recognition Conference

Stephany Dominguez represented L.C. Bird High School’s  FCCLA chapter at the State FCCLA Leadership and Recognition Conference  April 12-14,  at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. Along with 1300 FCCLA members from across the state of Virginia, she participated in STAR Events (Students Taking Action for Recognition). Stephany is the first L.C. Bird student to compete in the Culinary Exhibit, Decorated Cakes. In addition to baking and decorating a 10-inch cake to show her expertise and skill, she was required to create a very extensive Career Portfolio which included a career plan, up to date professional resume, samples of her work, references, FCCLA involvement, awards and certifications.  She received “perfect” scores from all the evaluators on her portfolio.

Stephany is skilled in the art of gum paste flowers. She had been working on the flowers for about a month while balancing school and home responsibilities. She baked a three layer 10-inch French Vanilla cake and decorated it using the basket weave technique with chocolate frosting. Dominguez had one hour to put her display together; she selected her flowers, added grass and completed the cake with a gum paste handle zigzagged in the same chocolate frosting used on the cake. The finished product was breathtaking.  FCCLA members, state officers and advisors commented on Stephany’s skill. Not only did she create a variety of flowers, her flowers looked real.

No one was more surprised than Stephany when she was called to the stage and named gold winner and ”Best in State” in her category.  She received a medal, a trophy and $2,500 in scholarship money to attend The Culinary Institute of Virginia.
