Live theatre continues at the former Sycamore Rouge Theatre located at 306 N. Sycamore St. Its new tenant is Una “Auntie” Harrison and her theatre school, Theatre with Children for Children. Formerly located in space at the Appomattox Regional Governor’s School on West Washington Street, Harrison’s move was due to scheduling conflicts.
“The Governor’s School was absolutely wonderful to me and my students, but with the new schedule, the day did not work out for my students,” she said.
Harrison is holding an Open House at the school’s new home, which has been named Petersburg Little Theatre on Friday, Sept. 15 at 6 p.m. During the open house a live performance will be presented by the TWCFC Touring Company of young actors. The company will perform “The Best of Aesop’s Fables” written and directed by Harrison, artistic and teaching director.
Children attending may participate in the performance and experience the bright costumes and sets. They will be able to talk to the young actors, enjoy light refreshments and learn more about the school.
Show times during the open house are 6:30 p.m. with the performance of “The Lion and the Mouse” and “Birds of a Feather,” and 7:30 p.m. “The Tortoise and the Hare” and “The Boy Who Cried Wolf.”
Harrison started her theatre for children in Chester over 30 years ago. Theatre for Children with Children was located on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University for 18 years before moving to the Governor’s School where it was located for 10 years.
“Everywhere I have been I have loved and enjoyed,” she said. “They have all been wonderful.” Harrison said her school is about love, “I don’t teach just theater, I teach them life.”
