Skyhawks continue to dominate opponents

Bird running back Earl Hughes earned Village News player of the week honors for an outstanding performance against the Rapids, rushing for 203 yards and a touchdown, catching two passes for 53 yards and a touchdown and returning a punt 50 yards for a touchdown as the Skyhawks cruised to victory.

Quarterback Terrance Ervin finished 7-9 passing for 119 yards and two touchdowns. Wide out Rasheed Worsham caught four passes for 57 yards and a touchdown. Junior reserve running back Stephen Mines also found pay dirt twice.

The Skyhawks turned in another dominating defensive performance, limiting James River to 86 yards of total offense. Tyler Wilkins also intercepted a pass and returned it 27 yards for a score.

Through three games, the defending state champions have outscored their opponents 154-6 and face Monacan on the road Friday at 7:30 p.m.

After enjoying bye weeks, Matoaca travels to Meadowbrook for a 7 p.m. kick-off and Thomas Dale hosts Hopewell at 7 p.m.
