It is hard to imagine filling 306 customer orders per second during the course of a day on its peak day, November 26, but that has become routine for Amazon.com, a Seattle-based company with 85 fulfillment centers world-wide; forty of those in the U.S. with one in Chesterfield County’s backyard, located in the Meadowville Technology Park.
The fulfillment center opened a little more than a year ago and according to Tim Hall, General Manager for the center, “Our very first shipment was a pair of shooting glasses being shipped to a resident right here in Virginia.”
Today, there is a steady stream of packages leaving the 1.2 million sq. ft. center (25 football fields) each day. The workforce has been increased from 700 to 1,500 full-time employees today and thousands will be hired for the holiday season.
The company’s computer technology, impressively precise and all-knowing, keeps the system flowing smoothly, but certainly not possible without its human component. The Chesterfield site handles most anything you can imagine that can be handled and packed in a box.
Hall welcomed County officials, elected officials and guests to the official grand opening of the fulfillment center last Tuesday for an overview and tour of the center. He expressed his thanks to the community and the dedication and impressive individuals he has to work with to keep the center moving.
“I am so impressed with the community workforce here in Chester,” he said. “Thank you for making this day possible at Amazon.”
Delegate Riley Ingram, State Senator Henry Marsh, and Chesterfield County Board of Supervisor Chairman Dorothy Jaeckle spoke during the ceremony. Each spoke about how happy they were that Amazon decided to build one of their centers in Chesterfield.
“We are so proud that you are here,” said Del. Ingram. Sen. Marsh said, “I am truly the luckiest man in the world because I represent both Chesterfield County and Dinwiddie.” The fulfillment center in Dinwiddie handles larger items such as televisions, boats, lawn equipment, etc.
Chairman Jaeckle said she will never forget when the announcement was made that Amazon was coming to Chesterfield. “Amazon.com is one of the latest, greatest ways we do things today.” Following with a story of how her mother-in-law used Amazon to find a particular eye drop she was not able to get from her pharmacy. “Amazon is here and we are so privileged to have Amazon as one of our partners in Meadowville.”
Amazon is currently hiring Fulfillment Associates for the holiday season. Median pay is 30 percent higher than jobs in traditional retail stores. Amazon provides a full-range of benefits, including shares of company stock, paid time off, an employee discount and life and disability insurance from day one.
