To the Editor:
Yes agreed, that the word “tax” is now the kiss of death for any needed service in Chesterfield (“the three-letter dirty word”). Yes, it was ridiculous in the recent election for Chesterfield voters to accept the need for new services, then defeat the meals tax that was needed to pay for the services.
I would argue that we get the public officials and policies that we deserve as voters. Unfortunately, that means that we will not achieve excellence any time soon in either of those categories. As voters we pay little attention to what goes on, and we are also oddly willing to accept things that are contradictory – such as expensive new services and tax policies that do not pay for them.
