Last week, UVa-Wise coach Dan Carter visited Matoaca, where he garnered commitments from two of the area’s more solid cross country runners. Matt Parker and Emily Brock, both of whom served as team captains for coach Nolan Shigley’s warriors, will continue their careers as Cavaliers.
Wise is an NAIA school that competes in the Mid-South Conference. “We are located in a beautiful running area. The region that extends from southern Ohio through southwest Virginia and eastern Tennessee and Kentucky is filled with great middle-distance programs. We see Emily as an established 5K runner, while Matt should continue to physically develop as he adjusts to the 8K distance in college,” Carter said.
“I just fell in love with the beauty of the campus,” said Parker. “I love to hunt and do anything outdoors. I see Wise as a perfect match.” Shigley spoke of how far Parker had come since his freshman year. “He was a real leader in our program this year,” Shigley said.
Brock was impressed with the family atmosphere on the campus. “Everyone we met on our visit was just so nice,” she said. “They seemed to really care about each other.”
