Bensley Elementary team wins Battle of the Books

The Battle of the Books team from Bensley Elementary School was the victor in a showdown with teams from Beulah and Davis elementary schools on April 27.

Each year, Chesterfield County’s elementary school librarians create a list of 25 interesting books for fifth graders to read, according to information from Patricia Anderson, a language arts support teacher who is also one of the Bensley team’s coaches. Library Media Specialist Camille Dungey also coaches the team.

If a fifth grader reads 10 or more of the books, and takes an automated test on each one, that student can be on the Battle of the Books team. This year, 10 Bensley students met this requirement, Anderson said.

On April 23, the 10 Bensley students had a school competition. The group was divided into two teams, and the students were able to buzz in to answer questions, according to information from Anderson. At the April 27 competition, the Bensley, Beulah and Davis teams all did well, but Bensley’s team answered the most questions and was declared the winner, she said.
