Curtis Elementary Principal Susan Pereira along with the school’s Student Council Association board members (SCA) were among 50-plus visitors to the new Big Lots store located on Weir Road next to Lowe’s for the grand opening celebration to accept a $1,500 donation to the school. Pereira said the call came “out of the blue” offering the donation.
“I love it,” she said during the celebration about partnerships with businesses. “We also partner with Home Depot and I am always looking for partnerships.”
Pereira said the money will be used for the purchase of math materials and books. SCA board members on hand for the check donation, presented by Bill Weaver, District Manager for Big Lots were Esai Giver, vice president, Hunter Zoller, president, Brianna Price, secretary and Shamus Jones, treasurer. This was the first official duty for the board outside of school and all felt very privileged and honor to be representing their school.
Also attending the grand opening were Dorothy Jaeckle, Bermuda District representative, Sen. Steve Martin, Doug Patton, Bermuda District planning commissioner, Will Davis, Economic Development director and several members from different departments in the county and schools. Representative Jaeckle praised Big Lots for their willingness to be a community partner and said, “Schools really depend on community involvement… Schools could not survive without community donations.”
Sen. Martin said he always enjoy the celebration of the opening of businesses and not their closings. “We appreciate all that you are doing in the different parts of the county and the opportunities you are giving for employment,” he said.
