Warriors aim for repeat district championship

Head Coach: Chris Szybisty
2013 Record: 15-3

Matoaca completed a successful season, bringing home a share of the Central District Championship, their first.

The team is led by Brandon Harper, the team’s top seed. The senior is a consistent player with a powerful serve and good tennis instincts. Reid Driskill, also a senior, will be the Warrior’s two seed. Driskill is a grind-it-out type of player and athlete who possesses a nice forehand stroke.

Freshman Ryan Egan comes in as the three seed and will partner with Harper in doubles.

Szybisty stressed the importance of the beginning of the schedule which includes Dinwiddie, Dale, Prince George and Clover Hill.

“With our youth this season, that will show us where we’re at,” he said.

Monarchs focused, mentally strong at the net

Head Coach: James Freeman
2013 Record: 4-10

A sophomore leads the way for the Meadowbrook boys, Leewood Nguyen.

“He’s like a wall, nothing gets past him,” said Freeman. “He’s got a great mental game and has been pretty much unshakeable.”

Freeman called second seeded Aaron Trejo “the heart and soul of the team.” Trejo has good speed and great accuracy with the racket.

Second year varsity player Nelson Jovel, the team’s third seed, and Ralph Winfrey are improved from last year. Winfrey’s height (6-5) makes him a real threat at the net.

Knights show determination, strong work ethic

Head Coach: Andrew Boydoh
2013 Record: 14-3

Thomas Dale, a perennial threat to win their district should have another strong team in 2014.

Phillip Crouch is the team’s top seed, and employs an uncanny skill to read his opponent’s next move on the court. Head Coach Andrew Boydoh called him a “natural athlete.”
Lyndon Wright, is a top three senior with a standout work ethic.

“His determination to be the best shows not only on the court, but in other aspects of life,” said Boydoh.

Like rival Matoaca, the Knights have a young player, sophomore Nate Haskins who they expect to contribute early and develop into a force.

The Knights are looking to build on a share of the 2013 Central District Championship in 2014.
