Members of Boy Scout Troup 917 and Cub Scout Pack 917 spent one of their spring break days cleaning up Ettrick. The Scouts participated in an annual Ettrick Clean-Up Day coordinated by R. L. Dunn last Thursday.
All Ettrick residents were encouraged to bring their trash and discarded materials to the Ettrick Fire Station where the clean-up began. The Scouts and other volunteers walked through the streets of Ettrick with bags in hand ending with nearly 30 bags of garbage. Volunteer Keith Fisher donated the use of his truck and agreed to haul away the trash as well as any other large items like old appliances and furniture.
Dunn donated the supplies, pizza and prizes for the drawings during the dinner meal for the Scouts. Prizes included sports equipment such as basketballs and soccer balls.
Dunn has been organizing the clean-up event for over 10 years. “This time of year the litter in Ettrick is very high because no one wants to pick trash up in the winter,” he said. “This is my way of giving back to the community.”
Assistant Scout Master and Cub Master Jose Ithier said they do many different things in the way of community service. “We try to teach the boys to do a good turn daily and be a good steward of the neighborhood.”
