Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound where we are celebrating Mother’s Day. The modern holiday of Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother in Grafton, West Virginia. She then began a campaign to make “Mother’s Day” a recognized holiday in the United States.
Although she was successful in 1914, she was already disappointed with its commercialization by the 1920s. Jarvis’ holiday was adopted by other countries and it is now celebrated all over the world. If you did not know this before, you do now! Grin!
Now, that we have that out of the way let’s talk about work. Actually about my workplace. We had a plant meeting the other day and one of the topics was about changes to the employee handbook. It was stated that since the first of the year we have terminated 41 new employees.
Yes you heard correctly. We have roughly 300 employees between our two plants and we are discharging them before they can complete their 90 day trial employment period. The main reason is that they are only allowed one absence or tardy in this initial time period and if they get a second one they are let go.
If that person was only one minute late they had to hit the bricks. Rules are rules, but we were losing some good workers, so they added wording to the handbook that on the second occurrence they might be terminated depending on an evaluation of their work performance. This makes good sense since it is hard these days to find good employees.
However there is a downside. The Plant Manager prior to this official change did give an exception to several employees based on pleas from their supervisors; however, some of them still got terminated when they failed to make it to the end of the 90 days without another occurrence. Some indeed were victims of circumstances, but others just showed their lack of desire to follow rules, which unfortunately seems to be a growing trend.
