The Next Level: Holness, Walker, McGhee

Freshman at Ferrum College

Holness, the lone Skyhawk currently at the next level in her sport, had a successful first season at Ferrum last fall. She appeared in 18 games, of which she started 17, scoring two goals on 17 shots and passing out two assists. Though the Panthers struggled as a young team, finishing 6-11 overall, Holness is part of the youth Ferrum hopes to build on. The 4-foot11 forward originally hails from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Logan Walker, Baseball
Matoaca High School
Senior at Bowling Green
Walker’s college career has been a successful one as he’s been a consistent cog in the middle infield for Bowling Green. Last season, Walker hit .260 with 25 RBI and was an essential part of Bowling Green’s MAC Championship. This season, the exercise science major is hitting .261 with two home runs and 22 RBI. At Matoaca, he had an outstanding senior year hitting .449 with five homers and 20 RBI as Matoaca fell in the state quarterfinals. Walker also hit .468 as a junior and made distinguished honor roll throughout high school.

Austin McGhee, Baseball
Thomas Dale High School
Sophomore at Chowan
McGhee, a big 6-foot 5 reliever turned in a second solid campaign for the Chowan Hawks in 2014. He made 16 appearances in relief, compiling a 1-1 record and pitching to a 2.25 ERA, striking out 11 batters in 16 innings pitched. “Big Ol’ Cat,” as he was called in high school, also registered three saves and figures to be a candidate for Chowan’s closer role next year. At Thomas Dale, McGhee played first base in addition to pitching and was 2nd Team All-Central District.
