Old Bermuda Hundred Road, Jeff Davis due for upgrades

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will start construction on road improvements on Old Bermuda Hundred Road, which includes work on Jefferson Davis Highway in 2015. The project will include an intersection upgrade at Jefferson Davis Highway and Old Bermuda Hundred Road. The project also includes sidewalks.

The project will extend south at least 1,000 feet on Jefferson Davis Highway. It is still unknown how far north from Old Bermuda Hundred Road it will extend. The project will cost $2 million.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has requested that Chesterfield County convey 8.25 acres of right-of-way to VDOT for the improvements.

The project will require a public hearing by the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors.

Area road projects continue on the books

  • Route 1 Bridge over CSX (north of Bellwood Road) Replacement Project: This VDOT project involves reconstruction of the bridge over the railroad tracks, extension of the left turn lane into DSCR and improvements to the ramp at Bellwood Road. Design is underway; CSX has requested a plan revision to accommodate four rail lines and a service road.  Due to funding shortfalls, the schedule for construction is uncertain at this time.
  • Route 1 at Ruffin Mill Road Pedestrian Improvements: The county was successful in obtaining bike and pedestrian safety funds for pedestrian improvements along southbound Route 1 between Bermuda Run apartments and the shopping center at Happy Hill Road.  The project includes replacing guardrail that blocks the pedestrian pathway, installing sidewalk and paving the shoulder along Route 1. VDOT is managing this project and has put the project on hold.
  • Route 10 Widening (Route 1 to Meadowville Road) Project:  The county completed public hearing design plans to widen Route 10 to 6 and 8 lanes from Interstate 95 to Meadowville Road and the Commonwealth Transportation Board approved the plans in Fall 1999. This project will continue improvements to Route 10 funded with county bonds.  Previously, VDOT provided $27.6 million for this project in the Fiscal Year (FY) 2008 through FY13 Six-Year Improvement Program. Allocations shown in the revised FY10-FY15 Plan total $2.5M with a funding shortfall of over $56 million. Due to the funding shortfall, this project is on hold.
  • Route 288/Chester Road Interchange Improvements: The County was successful in securing Federal funds to construct the northwest loop of the Route 288/Chester Road interchange. VDOT will manage the project. Construction has not begun.
