A NEW JOURNEY: Chesterfield County graduates more than 4,100 students

Gather a group of graduating seniors and the consensus on what they enjoyed most about high school is the friendships they made. Yes, they enjoyed learning something new everyday, the specific programs many had an opportunity to participate in and the challenge of excelling in classes, but, for the most part, they enjoyed their friends.

Matoaca Valedictorian Bilal Sayar said there was so much to enjoy in high school, “the clubs, your friends, there is never a dull moment.” Salutatorian for Thomas Dale High School, Maryann Tzu-Faun Chan, said, “The best of high school are the memories you made with friends and relationships that will last a life time.” Sayar and Chan were two of more than 4,100 Chesterfield County students who received their high school diplomas during graduation ceremonies that were held June 9-12 at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Siegel Center.

Nearly 2,000 of those graduates were in the Village News readership area. Family names topping the list with the most graduates among the five high schools in the area were: Williams, Johnson, Brown, Jones, White and Taylor. Most likely distant relatives, maybe not even relatives, but if they were all related, imagine the party with the Williams, who had 28 graduates spread throughout the area, followed by the Johnsons with 21, the Browns with 18, the Joneses with 16, the Whites with 14 and the Taylors with 11.

L.C. Bird High School held its ceremony on Thursday, June 10 at 10 a.m. and graduated 383 seniors. Meadowbrook High School also held commencement exercises Thursday at 2:30 p.m. and issued 422 diplomas. Matoaca High School graduated 412 on Friday, June 11 at 10 a.m. Chesterfield Community High School and Thomas Dale High School held exercises on Saturday with Community certifying 154 graduates in a noon commencement and Thomas Dale with 588 candidates during a 3:30 p.m. ceremony.
