Over the last nine years, the Chester YMCA Training Team has grown from about 20 members to nearly 300. An excited and experienced coaching staff greeted a record number of participants last Saturday morning at Thomas Dale, kicking off a 10-week program preparing runners and walkers of all skill levels for the Monument Avenue 10k.
“We have seen tremendous growth in the program over the last several years,” said Chester head coach John Hall. “Folks come out and enjoy the family atmosphere of the training team and they tell their friends. We have a number of people who come out every year, but, more importantly, we add 50-100 new faces each year.”
Husband-and-wife team John and Lisa Burton are graduates of the training program and have been members of the coaching staff for three years.
“The training team completely changed our lives; we were stuck in the cycle of work and a sedentary lifestyle at home,” John Burton said. “The program encouraged us to make fitness an integral part of our daily lives, both for us and our children.”
The coaching staff is all about fun and encouragement and welcomes participants at their present fitness level, regardless where that may be. It isn’t too late for those who would like to be part of the Chester YMCA 10k Training Team. Registration is open through midnight, Friday, Jan. 22.
Register online at www.sportsbackers.org. The cost of the program is $50, and it includes entry into the March 27 race, a 10-week training program, an experienced coaching staff, and a training team T-shirt. Questions can be directed to coach John Hall at email@example.com.
