Virginia State University improved its record to 6-2 Saturday with an impressive 42-0 victory over visiting Lincoln University. The game was played under glorious weather conditions before an overflow homecoming crowd on the Ettrick campus’ Rogers Stadium natural grass playing field.
The Trojans appear to be on the right track. The team boasts a number of local players, including defensive standout Howard Spencer (Dale), the kicking tandem of Justin Parker (Matoaca) and Billy Rudd (Meadowbrook) and freshman linebacker Andrew Faison (Bird). State will welcome all-state tight end Michael Dudley next season. Dudley is enrolled at VSU, but is redshirting as he recovers from a gunshot wound suffered over the summer when he attempted to defuse a domestic dispute at a Chester area restaurant.
If State is able to clear its remaining two hurdles, Virginia Union and St. Paul’s (they are favored in each), they will head to the Nov.13 CIAA Championship game in Durham.
An added emphasis on the recruitment of local talent should make the Trojans an attractive draw next season. With a beautiful on-campus stadium, plenty of parking, affordable ticket prices and championship football, fans owe it to themselves to make the short drive to Ettrick in support of college football in our own backyard.
